Ok, so I know I have fallen off the wagon blogging here... I've been focusing on my lunch blog.
But I can't let a new season of American Idol begin without marking it with a blog post!
Lots of changes this season. Nigel Lythgoe is back as producer. Simon and Kara are out. Steven and J.Lo are in. I'm not at all sure how I feel about any of these changes, but as always, I'm looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.
J.Lo's entrance is in a sparkly jumpsuit with built in saddle bags. Nuff said. Steven Tyler wants to find a Janis Joplin for this generation, and urges hopefuls to sing like they do when no one's looking. J.Lo wants to be the compassionate one, and claims not to be in the business of crushing dreams. Randy is excited for the new table.
Also welcome, Jimmy Iovine as on-staff mentor. We'll see about that, too.
First auditions are in NJ. And Seacrest was welcomed to the NJ audition arena by Constantine Maroulis.
First in is Rachel Zevita auditioned in Season 6, made it to Hollywood, and was cut the first day. JLo remembers her from her previous audition. She has a really nice voice with good control. I worry that she has a phglemy sound at times, but her transitions between octaves are good. JLo thinks that it wasn't the best audition. Steven thinks that she didn't show the fire that she has. He wants to "let her in the door, water the flower, and watch it grow." She's through to Hollywood, but it's tentative.
Caleb Hawley is up next. Steven was digging him for sure (providing percussion). I forsee Steven being the sound byte king of this season. The judges dig him (a lot) and he is through.
Kenzie Palmer is 15 (they lowered the age limit this year). She's a musical theater student at a performing arts school. And she has an awesome voice. I don't know about her presence. Steven agrees with me. JLo does not. Randy sees what Steven was saying, but loves her voice. And so Kenzie is through to Hollywood.

Then comes Achille Lovle from the Ivory Coast. She declared that she was singing Dress You Up by Madonna. Instead, she bellowed something completely unintelligible. Steven said that she needed to reign the wild horses in. Achille said that her vocal coach was working on her accent, but Randy said "it's just not your thing, baby." She got the first no votes we saw, and Jennifer was feeling horribly and was ready to go home after the no. Get used to it, babe.

Tiffany Rios demonstrated the proper technique for teasing hair. What is this, 1983? She wants to make Jennifer Lopez proud. She broke into tears as soon as she got up on the audition stage, and got a hug from JLo. Oh, and she's singing an original song. With accompaniment fro her boob stars, jingling along. It wasn't the worst I've heard, until she went up super high. She was allowed to sing a second song, for which she covered up the boob stars, because it was a more emotional song. It's a Celine song (I'm Your Lady), and it wasn't embarrassing. If she laid off the oranging, I could take her more seriously. I expected her to suck and she didn't. She's through.
Montage of terrible singers. Steven got some practice with the no's. JLo Paula'd it up and couldn't say no. She seemed physically pained to deny people.
Robbie Rosen was in a wheelchair in kindergarten due to an illness. (Sinnovitis? Not familiar with it). He's 16. He's singing Yesterday, and he's good. Good control, nice tone. That annoying slight exhale I dislike at the end of phrases, but not too terrible about it. He got a wow from Steven, who appreciated the arrangement. He got a lot of happiness from the judges. Randy liked how he marinated the notes. He's through.
Steven had a fan club. And he appreciated the pretty ladies, too. Didn't Paula get in trouble for that?
Chris Cordiero is a proud 18 year old Boy Scout. He made a PSA video for his Eagle Project against texting and driving. Wow. He has no charisma at all. And a really stupid hat. JLo wondered if he was dressed to go fishing... And he's predictably terrible singing My Way. His mother, in the hallway, singing to Seacrest, seemed to be much better than her son...
Wow. Nervous burper. That's gross. And he's awkward in many other ways, too. His name is Michael Perotto, and he sounds like a singing muppet. My husband says he sounds like Gomer Pyle. JLo told Steven to make him stop. Steven wondered if he ate a lot of paint chips as a child, and said American Idol has higher standards, to which Michael busted out something he thought had "higher standards." Steven said "What we have here is a failure to communicate." JLo said that he sounded like he was singing in an imitation of someone else's voice. Steven said maybe he's a natural for Broadway. Randy said that he shouldn't sing anywhere.
Ashley Sullivan has a nervous laugh when saying that she is the next American Idol, and said that she might be the first Awkward Idol. And she's a huge Britney fan. Carries a Britney picture in her pocket for good luck. She's singing a song from Thoroughly Modern Millie, and it was really good! Very musical theatre. Wonder if she has anything more modern. JLo said that her thing was more for musical theatre and less for American Idol. Ashley said that she wants to be the first musical theatre pop star, and thinks that pop needs to get with Liza Minelli. I kind of really love her. Randy gave her a no, but the other two gave her a yes and she's to Hollywood. Steven said that wanted to personally work that into something good.
Victoria Huggins is from North Carolina, and I find her precosiously obnoxious. She does video updates. Wow. I kind of want to punch her. She doesn't have a bad voice, but I don't think she connects with the lyrics of the song at all. Steven was amazed at how proud she was of herself. JLo thinks she's adorable. Steven made a crack about her knee length skirt, and she "yo-yo dawged" Randy. And she's through. Man, I hope that she doesn't make it far.. she's worse than DiGarmo.
Melinda Ademi is stunningly gorgeous. She's from Kosovo and her family escaped during the war. Her father got a Green Card in a lottery. Wow. I am so happy that she has a great voice, too. And nice control. She's in. Hurrah!
Devyn Rush is a singing waitress in Times Square. She's singing God Bless the Child, and I love her voice and her attitude. Nice scatting! Steven said it was delicious. JLo was totally surprised. Randy thought that her look and her voice were bait and switch, in a good way. He said that she has a really good ear. JLo reminds her that she needs to believe in herself and dress the part so people can see that she's the total package.

Yoji "Pop" Asano has been imitating Michael Jackson since he was 2, or actually before he was born. Wow. That's dedication. He hated the Party in the USA song by Miley Cyrus, and so decided to sing it. I use that term loosely. He's doing Michael-esque moves, but he has no vocal talent and it was painful. And that brings us to the first singing montage, all to a that stupid ass song, some good and some... well... just dreadful. Yeah. Yoji is NOT through.
And montage of awful... as the judges tried to let people down lightly.
Brielle Von Hugel is from Statten Island, and her dad used to be in a doowop group. He has survived throat cancer - and here I was suggesting that he sounds like Mo from The Simpsons. Oops. And she's quite good. They loved her and invited her dad in. She's through, though JLo thinks she has a little work to do.
Travis Orlando has a twin brother who is completely different from him. He's from the Bronx, and they have been in shelters after their dad lost his job, and the area was really bad. He sings Eleanor Rigby, and he's got a really different and cool take on it. They asked him to sing something else, and he busted out I'm Yours by Jason Mraz. I really really like him. He's only 16. Wow. And he's in.
Ok, so I am more than pleasantly surprised by the new season. I don't miss Simon.
What's that I said?
That's right, I don't miss Simon. The new judges are good, and the singers are good so far. Not too much spotlight on the embarrassments, and that makes me happy. Hooray!

American Idol: Top 12 Women - 2.23.10
Let's see how this shakes down!

I fast forwarded through most of the filler. Ellen wants them to Be all that thye can Be. Ellen is no longer next to Simon, and she claims it's because Simon wants her, but it's not going to happen. Roll tape of Simon supposedly getting frisky with Ellen under the Hollywood table. Funny.
Now, down to it.
It's time for Billboard Chart music.
01) Paige Miles (It's All Right Now, by Free) She started out really weak and and she has good stage presence, but she does not ennunciate well and it bugs me. She's not doing much for me, though she isn't bad. She just didn't do much to stand out. Simon thinks that she has the best voice out of all the girls, but he didn't like the song for her. Kara was digging the song and loved how she put soul into the rock, although she wanted more from the chorus. Randy thinks it's a group song, so that's why it may not have been the best song, but thinks she blew the doors off the thing with her voice. Ellen agrees and disagrees with everyone. She loved how present Paige was, and thought she pulled it off. She is apparently sewn into her outfit. I've been there (in a play) and it's not fun. She's excited because she can pee now.
02) Ashley Rodriguez (Happy, by Leona Lewis) She started out a little too low for her voice, and I appreciate that she didn't just belt and try to get by on the power off the bat, but it wasn't as good as I really wanted her to be. I have high hopes for her, but the whole song kind of sounded flat. Instead of sounding happy, it sounded morose. It was bad. Oh, Ashley. I think that was a terrible song choice. Kara said there were some nice moments, but thought there were definitely moments that weren't great, and she'd rather see her take on more unexpected songs. Randy didn't see her in the song, though he thought she did a decent Leona. Ellen says she seems to have everything going for her, but wanted more risk. Simon thought it was clumsy and didn't like the arrangement. He thinks that Ashley is going backwards, and she is singing other people's songs not very well. I would have to agree. I am very disappointed in that performance.
03) Janell Wheeler (What About Love, by Heart) She certainly is beautiful. That's for sure. Unfortunately, I think it was the totally wrong song for her. She's obviously very nervous, and she had some good moments in there, but it was rough. Randy Yo-yo-yo-d her, and said it wasn't his favorite song choice, because the song didn't work with her unique voice. Ellen liked the song choice, even though Janell missed a couple notes. She appreciated Janell's stage presence. Simon said she gave it 100% effort, but delivered about 65%. He did think she had some moments. Kara likes Janell, but thought the song was way too big for her, and it removed everything distinct from her voice. I'd agree.
04) Lilly Scott (Fixin' a Hole, by the Beatles) I love her silvery hair. I almost wish is were even more silvery. I love what she does with her voice and her guitar vibe is cool. Talk about bringing something unique to the stage. Go Lilly! Ellen thinks this is what they are talking about. Random song choice, distinctive voice, great presence, and a good delivery. Simon thinks it's the best so far, because she sang it because she likes the song and it portrayed her as an artist. He wants more star power from her. Kara thinks she is believable and comes from her heart. She thinks that busking on the street for money really helps performers, and predicts that Lilly will be remembered. Randy loves that Lilly seems like an indi artist and is honest in her artistry.
05) Katelyn Epperly (Oh Darling, by the Beatles) She's got a great look, and she is comfortable on stage. She's got a great depth to her voice and I love it. It's almost Kelly Clarkson-esque. I'm not entirely sure about her (leather?) dress, but I'll forgive her that for the great performance. I could be a fan of hers if she keeps that sort of thing up. Simon worried that she screamed parts of the song, and thought it was messy, but he liked her, and thought it was brave and quirky. Kara thinks that Katelyn knows her own voice really well, and thinks that she improved the song. She didn't love the outfit and wanted her to be more natural (without the red lipstick). Randy likes her because she paid attention to the tones and not singing a whole slew of runs. Go Randy. Did I just say that? Ellen worried that she was pushing too hard in the beginning, but ended up really liking it and thinks that Katelyn has an amazing voice.
06) Haeley Vaughn (I Wanna Hold Your Hand, by the Beatles) She brought out a red guitar and and a ridiculous white ruffled outfit for the song, and she certainly changed it up some, but I thought she was rather shrieky in places. I didn't like it much. I found it harsh. She was much nicer when she was singing quietly. She seemed less strained. Kara thought technically there were a lot of problems with it, but she likes how much fun Haeley has on stage. Randy, yo, loves how unpredictable Haeley is, and thought that the high notes were not really pleasing, but thinks that she has possibilities. Ellen thinks she shines on stage (especially for 16) and enjoyed it. Simon thought it was verging on terrible and thought she was like a wind-up smiling doll. He called it a complete and utter mess. I'm with Simon.
07) Lacey Brown (Landslide, by Fleetwood Mac) I really love her look, and I kind of like her voice, but she has some weird pronounciation issues while she's singing. It's weird. I can't decide if I like her or not. I don't know if it was the best song for her. Randy, yo, loves the song, but not for Lacey. He thought it was pitchy and terrible and didn't suit her. Ellen thinks she is better than this performance. Simon thought it was quite depressing, and thought it was kind of indulgent. He doesn't think she's worked out who she is as an artist. Kara wished that she had sung some Sixpence None the Richer, or something similar. She and Simon like her eyes. Agreed. Lacey loves the song and tried to defend her choice. Simon didn't look impressed. She looks like a pixie, but I didn't like that performance.
08) Michelle Delamor (Fallin', by Alicia Keys) I am really sick of this song, so Michelle's going to have to do a whole lot to impress me with it. It's a pretty darned good rendition, admittedly. She seems confident and comfortable on stage, and she's beautiful. Ellen called it fantastic, but thought it seemed easy for her to sing, and thinks that Michelle has more in her. Simon thought she was very professional, close to the original, but didn't think she had any wow moments. Kara thought that there were moments where she hit it, but moments where she missed it, and wants her to be more unique. Randy thought she did a pretty good job, and has a great look, but wanted more risks.
09) Didi Benami (The Way I Am, by Ingrid Michaelson) I love this song. Love it. I think that Didi showed a lot of her unique vocal qualities to their best. He macrame vest is a bit weird, but that doesn't take away from the great vibe of her voice. She looked totally at home with it. Simon worried that there are too many people trying to sound like Adele or Duffy and was missing the spark. He didn't like the song, but he does like Didi and her voice. Kara likes the song, and thinks that while there are people out there who sound like Didi, Kara thinks she is showing another level. It was a bit pitchy. Randy was also missing the star factor. He thought it was sleepy. Ellen thought that if it was one song in a set, it would be great, but it was a little low key for a first impression. I still like her.
10) Siobahn Magnus (Wicked Game, by Chris Issac) She's a glass blowing apprentice, and I like that. I like her look tonight. It's a big improvement. I like her because she's great alto. I think the microphone was a little weird in the beginning. She's got great octave transitions, too. She's a little throaty in her tone, but I still kind of like her. Kara said she wouldn't have picked the song, but she kind of liked it. She does think that Siobahn gets a little nasal at times (and I would say throaty). Randy liked the Stevie Wonder song in the final Hollywood round better, and thinks the song was too small for her. Ellen loved it, loved the way she worked the stage, and loved how deeply she started. Simon called her a funny little thing, liked the song, but didn't love it. She wanted to show her range. I like that.
11) Crystal Bowersox (Hand in My Pocket, by Alanis Morisette) Really good song choice for her. She sounds like she's been on stage forever. She's got the harmonica out with her guitar again, and I love it. She's really really really good. On another note, I adore her earrings. Wow. That was awesome. Randy loves her originality and honesty. He wasn't sure about the song, but didn't care because he loves her. Ellen is a fan of Crystal and thinks she adds something fresh to the show. Simon thought it was good, but thinks that there are thousands of Crystals doing the same thing outside of subway stations, and thought that the song was a little sound-alike. He suggested David Bowie, and she thought that would be fun. He does really like her and thinks that she's refreshing. Kara thought she was good, but thinks she has greatness in her. Her guitar is signed by Melissa Etheridge and Shania Twain, and that's cool.
12) Katie Stevens (Feelin' Good, by Michael Buble) She's got another good rich voice, and she's another one who is going to have to watch the throatiness. She's really much more mature in her voice than her 17 years. Ellen thought it was too conservative a song and wanted to see her be fresh, modern, and young, even though she sang it beautifully. Simon thought it felt like her parents dressed her and gave her the song, and it was verging on annoying and pageanty. Kara thought it was pitchy and worried that Katie maybe couldn't hear herself, and hopes that she gets another chance because she's really good. Randy thinks that she was pushing too hard and it made her go sharp. He wanted her to young it up. Agreed.
My favorites for the night have been Lilly, Katelyn, Didi, Siobahn, and Crystal. Crystal, Siobahn, and Lilly were on top of that pile. I think that Haeley, Lacey, Ashley, and Janell are in trouble. On playback, I really really didn't like Haeley or Lacey at all. Lacey, I am disappointed in, because I loved her initial audition. I was surprised by Michelle, because we hadn't seen her really before.

My favorites for the night have been Lilly, Katelyn, Didi, Siobahn, and Crystal. Crystal, Siobahn, and Lilly were on top of that pile. I think that Haeley, Lacey, Ashley, and Janell are in trouble. On playback, I really really didn't like Haeley or Lacey at all. Lacey, I am disappointed in, because I loved her initial audition. I was surprised by Michelle, because we hadn't seen her really before.

American Idol: 2.9.10 Hollywood Week
Welcome, Ellen!
Welcome, lots and lots of people who believe themselves to be The Next American Idol.
The first round is sudden death. You sing (a capella or with an instument) and you are in, or you are gone.
Katie Stevens is up first, and she was a little froggy, but I still like her style and her voice. She just sounded like she was singing too much in her throat. The judges like her.
Skiiboski is up next. I still don't find much interesting about him. Ellen said she felt stalked by him, and he was performing like a leopard in a cage, and said it's a bad idea to scare your audience, and it's a fine line between sexy and scary.
Time to break them up into lines. Katie is in, Skiiboski is out. Good. Skiiboski decided to plead his case, and Simon told him he's just not a very good singer, and he failed the audition. Randy told him to change his stage name.
Montage of Simon hating everything, and Ellen letting people down in funny ways.
Vanessa Wolf and Andrew Garcia were good in the previous rounds.
Andrew has decided to sing Paula's Straight Up, with a guitar, and I like it. I would listen to that on the radio. It was very cool. Too bad Paula isn't there to hear it. He had the audience, that's for sure. Too bad he had his eyes closed the whole time. Kara called it genius, and Ellen put on the Paula over-the-head clap. Kara said his interpretation was akin to Adam last season. I wouldn't deny that. I really liked it.
Vanessa's up. I hope that she enjoyed her aeroplane and her peanuts on her aeroplane. She looks damned nervous. She kind of slaughtered Oasis in her audition, so sadly, I think Vanessa's going to be back on that aeroplane. Ellen told her to embrace her unique qualities, and her nerves were clearly evident.
Tasha Layton was also in the line, but we didn't get to hear her. Andrew is in, Tasha is in, but Vanessa is out. Hope that she comes back.

Cornelius Edwards who split his pants in his initial audition was horrible, and Maegan Wright was disappointing, even though I was mesmerized by her shiny sparkly purple nails. Amadeo DiRocco shouted and got rejected.
Janell Wheeler (did we see her before?) brought out her guitar and was super. She's really really pretty and I like her voice. Ellen called her amazing, and she is in.

Mary Powers, the Rocker Mom, sang Pink, and it was a really good decision. She's got a really good voice.

Simon told them not to be nervous, not to be boring, and not to forget his words.
Jay Stone the beatboxer was bad. There's a reason that beatboxing usually doesn't happen at the same time as singing.
Lilly Scott had her guitar and her silver hair, and she was interesting. I like her and her peacock earrings. Kara said everything about her was refreshing.
Lilly is safe, along with some guy named Sam.
Michael "I've been kicked off" Lynch missed his wife going into labor because he was in Hollywood. He must really hate his dad right now. It's really a shame, because he's got a good voice and her can play the guitar. I don't like the random grunting. Simon told Michael it was a good day.
Cancer Survivor Boy Justin Williams and Tim Urban are up next.
Tim is up first with his guitar, and sang David Cook's Come Back to Me, and proved that David Cook is much better than he is. He was weak at the ends of phrases and lacked conviction. Kara told him that the chorus was shaky.
Justin sang with a keyboard, and we didn't see a lot of his audition, Randy said it was interesting, and it didn't sound like a good interesting.
Justin is out, but Tim moves on.
Paige DeChaucey and Erika Rose are out. Both the Jersey sisters are out.
Maddie Curtis is 16, but looks about 30 in her dress. She's the one with the four brothers with Down's. She had a weird song choice and sang it well, in parts, but she seems off key in some transitions. Simon agrees with me that it was the wrong song choice for her.
Casey James who too his shirt off for Kara in the initial audition brought the blues guitar to the stage, and dang, I like him. Randy brought out the yo, dude and really loved him.
Casey is in. Maddie is out, but hey, she's only 16. Try again, Maddie!
In the last line of the day is Didi Benami and she is singing a Kara song. I really dig her voice and her understated guitar work. She does put on a really odd accent at times while she sings, but I love her, and I love her octave transitions. She's wonderful. Simon said that he really loved the song and likes the fact that she was a waitress.
Crystal Bowersox, single mom from Chicago, got a tattoo of her (adorable) son's name on her back to give her luck. She sang Natural Woman, and she sang it well, guitar in hand. I could really do without the dreads. I really really hate dreads. They make me want to go wash my own hair. She got the whole audience singing backup for her, and she was good. Simon told her she was infectious.
Both are safe.

American Idol: 1.20.10
Orlando, with Kristen Chenowith, from my dear and beloved (and so sadly canceled) Pushing Daisies.
Hoping it's better than Chicago!
Theo Glinton (22) He thinks he's Lady Gaga, all bedazzled. I have a feeling he's going to be just wretched. He wants a corporate hair dressing salon. He has a really bad speech impediment, and he shouted a lot... he was distracting. He offered other songs up to sing, and Kara told her that he wasn't pitchy, his tone just was too over the top. He's gone. They told him to lose the bedazzlement, and Kara offered the advice that he smelled nice... and then he couldn't find the way out.
Montage of rejects.... in chicken suits? And, of Kara and Kristen getting along like gangbusters. They annoyed Simon and broke out singing together randomly. Simon told one contestant that they sang like they sat on a cat. Ouch.
Seth Rollins (28) Back story! Autistic kid! This must mean he's going to at least be passable. His son wanted to go into his audition with him, and cried. He's got a really nice voice, and he's likable. I could get behind him, I think. A few too many random runs, though. Kristen thought he made the song his own and loved everything about him. Kara wanted to hear more, and Simon liked that he knew who he is. Randy thinks that he needs to exude himself a little more... but he's in unanimously.
Another montage of rejects? Really? can't we see some good people? Please?? And there were some Golden Tickets in the montage, but we didn't hear any of them. Boo for that.
Jermaine Purifoy (24) He has a Stevie Wonder vibe to his voice, and I kind of like him. Kristen said that his voice was seemless. Randy thought he was the best this season so far. Kara loved his honesty and his conviction and his smile. Simon thinks the chicks will like him. He's in.
Shelby Dressel (18, Avon Park, FL) is the last audition of the day, and she has partial facial paralysis. She's really pretty, and she sang Nora Jones pretty well, but then she forgot her lyrics and swore. oops. The judges liked her. Simon gave her a yes with a small y, and the other judges also gave her nods. She's in.
19 made it through from Day 1. I wish we had seen more of them.
Kristen wasn't there the second day, and that's sad... Kara gave the hopefuls a pep talk before the auditions started, though.
Jay Stone (25, Miami) He did a lot of weird beatboxing to the Beatles, and it was really distracting. He was a good beat boxer, that's for sure, but can he sing? I have no idea. Kara thought it was amazing, but Simon was all wet. Randy asked if he could actually sing, and he broke into a really good vocal, and Kara started beat boxing to it, and really liked him. Randy still gave him a no, and Simon gave him a no. Kara pleaded with Randy, and won. Jay said that Blake wasn't doing the beat boxing and the singing simultaneously, so he's new and different. I say he wasn't doing it because it doesn't sound good.
Janell Wheeler (24, Tampa) She has a really good look and a nice voice.
Brittany Star James (23) is really beautiful and I like her a lot
Kasi Beford (19) has purple extensions and a neat voice.
All three above are in.
Cornelius Edwards learned his dance moved from his exotic dancer friends, and ripped his pants straight down the crotch when he did a split. His voice wasn't bad, and he ended up getting three yeses and a request to get some new pants.

Bernadette & Amanda Desimone are from NJ. Bernadette sang first and she's cute. She's got some good stage presence. Amanda is not nearly as good. Of course, she foolishly sang Whitney. She went off key all over the place and was trying too hard. Randy thought that Bernadette chose a better song, and Kara thought they would bring something to Hollywood. Randy gave them both yeses. Kara also gave them yeses. Simon wanted to say no to Amanda, but ended up letting them both go through.
Jared Norell was working on his energy and enthusiasm and didn't sound at all excited or enthusiastic. He "sang" Amazing Grace like a small furry animal being killed in a power saw. It was dreadful. Kara said "Oh, Good Lord, what WAS that?" She said it sounded like a lawn mower. Simon told him to go, and he decided to sing again. Randy told him to stop and he just can't sing. Jared decided to torture them some more. Security was called and he was escorted out. Forcibly. Wow. He was handcuffed. Holy cow. Delusional.
Matt Lawrence (25) He's an ex-con, reformed. He robbed a bank with a beebee gun when he was 15, and was in jail for 4 years. Wow. Now, he wants to do something to make his family proud. He's got a bit too much throatiness to his voice for my taste, but I could tell the judges liked him. Simon thought it was authentic, and Kara loved how controlled he was. Randy thought he sang genuinely. He's in.
31 people it though to Hollywood from Orlando. Wish we had seen more of them.

American Idol: 1.13.10
Tonight - Atlanta, with guest judge Mary J. Blige. The auditions are on the 27th floor, which is something different.
Dowane Robinson (27, Atlanta) He claims to have music in his blood, and good lord, he's singing an original song. Simon was utterly confused by his original song, and he is terrible. It's like the "song" he "wrote" was meant for a duet, and Simon called it one of the worst original songs he's ever heard. Dowane thinks that they didn't like him because he didn't sing the song right because he was distracted by Simon. He kept attempting to sing, and they called security, which prompted Dowane to take the elevator back down those many many floors.
And another nameless untalented deluded person.
Kiah Johnson (26, Memphis) She won Miss Congeniality in a Miss America competition, and she has fluorescent green pants and red converse high tops.... She seems very sweet. She has a lot of voice in there, but something about her random unnecessary runs annoyed me. Mary J. and Randy love her, and Kara thinks she has a lot of likability. Simon thinks she could get a part in Oklahoma! but ends up admitting that she is pretty good. She is through with four yeses. I hope that she does something about her Sideshow Bob/Justin Guarini hair.
Miraim Lemnouni (25, Georgia) has the judges smiling, as did Noel Reese (16, Sophia NC) and Tisha Holland (18, Riverdale, GA). I think Miriam is my favorite of that little group.
Jermaine Sellers (26, Joliet, IL) His mother has spina bifida, and he's cared for her since he was 17. He turned Joan Osborne's What if God Was One of Us into something that Boyz to Men could have sung, and it annoyed me. He has a voice in there, but it's the kind of voice that I really don't dig. Of course, Kara drooled, and Randy thought he gave the best vocals ever. Mary said he was annointed. He's through.
Kristy Marie Agranow (25, Atlanta, GA, Local TV host) She started out really badly with a bad part of Love is a Battlefield, and I just don't think that singing is her calling. I know that she isn't going to go through as soon as she blathered on about how music and singing is her passion. She's out. Back to tv with her.

Last person of the day...
Vanessa Wolfe (19, Vonore, Tennessee) She jumps bridges, she has a super thick accent, she's stuck in the smallest town in Tennessee, and she wants out. She could be big in country, I think. I would like to hear her do other styles, too, when she is a little less nervous. I think she's through, though. Kara thinks that she is an authentic country singer. Simon finds her likable, even though she is ill prepared and nervous. I think she just propositioned Simon. Randy, Kara, and Mary J all gave her yeses, joined by Simon's yes, and she's in. Simon warned her to practice a ton and believe in herself so she doesn't get swallowed up in Hollywood. She's never been on an "aeroplane" before, and she declared that she was going to "eat peanuts on the aeroplane." I could like her, personality-wise, even though I don't love country.
Day 2
Jesse Hamilton (26, Alabama) He's almost died 3 times, and they did "cheap dramatizations" of his brushes with death. I'm not sure that was necessary... He has never sung in public before. This is not going to be good. He wanted to try a Garth Brooks song, but froze. Mary couldn't stop laughing, but covered her face and Kara tried to cover it by saying that she was upset. When he actually began singing, Mary broke down again, and it was not because she was sad. Except maybe for her ears. He's not going anywhere near Hollywood. Cheap effects to make it look like the elevator crashed with him in it. Ugh. Uneccesary.

Holly Harden (20, Rockmart,GA) She's dressed like a human guitar. She thinks she is the next great thing. We'll see about that. She's singing Loretta Lynn, and she has a much deeper and better voice than I expected. Randy liked her and thought she was funny, and Kara thought she was ballsy with a good voice. Mary didn't get it. Randy and Kara voted yes, Mary gave her a no, and then she called Simon gorgeous, and he responded by giving her the golden ticket.

Mallorie Haley (20, Winner, ND) Gosh, she's really beautiful, and she sang Janis Joplin, without trying to be Janis. Mary gave her a pass straight to Hollywood, and Kara agreed. Randy loved her look and her voice. Simon loved how fearless she was. Mary was right, and she's going to Hollywood. I kind of love her.

Antonio "Skii bo skii" (22, Orlando) He's a little nuts, but he's got a great voice and good stage presence. I expected terrible. He claims to be a package deal, like the dollar store. I think he needs to stop talking. Simon was put off by the outfit and thought the singing was awful. Kara thought it was going to be a disaster, but was impressed vocally, as was Mary J, but she worried that his image didn't match the voice. Randy also liked the vocals, but wanted him to lose the other nonsense. I hope he takes that to heart. The skii bo skii thing is idiotic.

Lauren (19, Baxley, GA) She had a really soft voice, and Simon stopped her immediately.
Carmen Rumer (18, Baxley, GA) She has the decidedly better voice, and sang a Kelly Clarkson song pretty well. Simon told them to be in a group together, because alone, they are boring. He told them they should be the Ditz sisters. Randy gave a yes to Carmen and a no to Lauren. Kara also gave a yes to Carmen, and a no to Lauren. So did Mary. Carmen is through and Lauren went home. It was sad. Simon didn't think that Carmen would be around for long in Hollywood. I think she has some potential.

Bryan Walker (25, Tennessee, Police Officer) He sang a song "in the style of Ruben Studdard", and because of that, I have a hard time getting behind him because the Velvet Teddybear annoys the crap out of me. He did a good job with it, though. Kara and Randy loved him. He's through to Hollywood. Lose the Ruben, and I could like him.
Lamare Royal (20, NC) He looked like he was having a seizure as he shrieked Kiss from a Rose. Randy called it torturous. He kept singing more, even after Kara was trying to talk, and Mary told him to stop trying to exhault himself. Randy said he was not ready yet, and Randy called him a terrible listener. Security brought him down in the elevator as he swore up a storm. He left, wishing Paula was there. He is going to feel like a moron when he watches this. God, he's freaking annoying. It's called control and constraint, dude. Look it up.
Final audition is General Larry Platt who sang "Pants on the Ground" He's 62, so this is a complete joke audition. I have to say, I kind of liked his song. "Looking like a fool with your pants on the ground..." It sure was funny. He had the judges singing the song, though.
Only 25 people made it though from Atlanta. And we learned that people look like fools with their pants on the ground. They had the whole holding room singing Pants on the Ground. Hilarious.
Next week, Chicago.
Tonight, I think my favorites were the barely shown Miriam Lemnouni and the gorgeous Mallorie Haley. How about you?
Dowane Robinson (27, Atlanta) He claims to have music in his blood, and good lord, he's singing an original song. Simon was utterly confused by his original song, and he is terrible. It's like the "song" he "wrote" was meant for a duet, and Simon called it one of the worst original songs he's ever heard. Dowane thinks that they didn't like him because he didn't sing the song right because he was distracted by Simon. He kept attempting to sing, and they called security, which prompted Dowane to take the elevator back down those many many floors.
And another nameless untalented deluded person.
Kiah Johnson (26, Memphis) She won Miss Congeniality in a Miss America competition, and she has fluorescent green pants and red converse high tops.... She seems very sweet. She has a lot of voice in there, but something about her random unnecessary runs annoyed me. Mary J. and Randy love her, and Kara thinks she has a lot of likability. Simon thinks she could get a part in Oklahoma! but ends up admitting that she is pretty good. She is through with four yeses. I hope that she does something about her Sideshow Bob/Justin Guarini hair.
Miraim Lemnouni (25, Georgia) has the judges smiling, as did Noel Reese (16, Sophia NC) and Tisha Holland (18, Riverdale, GA). I think Miriam is my favorite of that little group.
Jermaine Sellers (26, Joliet, IL) His mother has spina bifida, and he's cared for her since he was 17. He turned Joan Osborne's What if God Was One of Us into something that Boyz to Men could have sung, and it annoyed me. He has a voice in there, but it's the kind of voice that I really don't dig. Of course, Kara drooled, and Randy thought he gave the best vocals ever. Mary said he was annointed. He's through.
Kristy Marie Agranow (25, Atlanta, GA, Local TV host) She started out really badly with a bad part of Love is a Battlefield, and I just don't think that singing is her calling. I know that she isn't going to go through as soon as she blathered on about how music and singing is her passion. She's out. Back to tv with her.

Vanessa Wolfe (19, Vonore, Tennessee) She jumps bridges, she has a super thick accent, she's stuck in the smallest town in Tennessee, and she wants out. She could be big in country, I think. I would like to hear her do other styles, too, when she is a little less nervous. I think she's through, though. Kara thinks that she is an authentic country singer. Simon finds her likable, even though she is ill prepared and nervous. I think she just propositioned Simon. Randy, Kara, and Mary J all gave her yeses, joined by Simon's yes, and she's in. Simon warned her to practice a ton and believe in herself so she doesn't get swallowed up in Hollywood. She's never been on an "aeroplane" before, and she declared that she was going to "eat peanuts on the aeroplane." I could like her, personality-wise, even though I don't love country.
Day 2
Jesse Hamilton (26, Alabama) He's almost died 3 times, and they did "cheap dramatizations" of his brushes with death. I'm not sure that was necessary... He has never sung in public before. This is not going to be good. He wanted to try a Garth Brooks song, but froze. Mary couldn't stop laughing, but covered her face and Kara tried to cover it by saying that she was upset. When he actually began singing, Mary broke down again, and it was not because she was sad. Except maybe for her ears. He's not going anywhere near Hollywood. Cheap effects to make it look like the elevator crashed with him in it. Ugh. Uneccesary.

Holly Harden (20, Rockmart,GA) She's dressed like a human guitar. She thinks she is the next great thing. We'll see about that. She's singing Loretta Lynn, and she has a much deeper and better voice than I expected. Randy liked her and thought she was funny, and Kara thought she was ballsy with a good voice. Mary didn't get it. Randy and Kara voted yes, Mary gave her a no, and then she called Simon gorgeous, and he responded by giving her the golden ticket.

Mallorie Haley (20, Winner, ND) Gosh, she's really beautiful, and she sang Janis Joplin, without trying to be Janis. Mary gave her a pass straight to Hollywood, and Kara agreed. Randy loved her look and her voice. Simon loved how fearless she was. Mary was right, and she's going to Hollywood. I kind of love her.

Antonio "Skii bo skii" (22, Orlando) He's a little nuts, but he's got a great voice and good stage presence. I expected terrible. He claims to be a package deal, like the dollar store. I think he needs to stop talking. Simon was put off by the outfit and thought the singing was awful. Kara thought it was going to be a disaster, but was impressed vocally, as was Mary J, but she worried that his image didn't match the voice. Randy also liked the vocals, but wanted him to lose the other nonsense. I hope he takes that to heart. The skii bo skii thing is idiotic.

Lauren (19, Baxley, GA) She had a really soft voice, and Simon stopped her immediately.
Carmen Rumer (18, Baxley, GA) She has the decidedly better voice, and sang a Kelly Clarkson song pretty well. Simon told them to be in a group together, because alone, they are boring. He told them they should be the Ditz sisters. Randy gave a yes to Carmen and a no to Lauren. Kara also gave a yes to Carmen, and a no to Lauren. So did Mary. Carmen is through and Lauren went home. It was sad. Simon didn't think that Carmen would be around for long in Hollywood. I think she has some potential.

Bryan Walker (25, Tennessee, Police Officer) He sang a song "in the style of Ruben Studdard", and because of that, I have a hard time getting behind him because the Velvet Teddybear annoys the crap out of me. He did a good job with it, though. Kara and Randy loved him. He's through to Hollywood. Lose the Ruben, and I could like him.
Lamare Royal (20, NC) He looked like he was having a seizure as he shrieked Kiss from a Rose. Randy called it torturous. He kept singing more, even after Kara was trying to talk, and Mary told him to stop trying to exhault himself. Randy said he was not ready yet, and Randy called him a terrible listener. American Idol - 5.6.09: Results Show
I don't know what was up with Seacrest in the mosh pit with Queen Lights on him, but it was a bad idea all around. Then he had to make his grand staircase entrance. Also a bad idea. I don't like that staircase. I don't think the stage manager does, either.
I am totally stoked about both No Doubt and Daughtry. And Paula is performing, too!! Cool. Ought to be fun.
The Ford Video was kind of lame again this week. The music fell kind of flat, like their paper cutout selves. Something missing in it, not sure what.
And now, Slash is playing lead guitar for the group sing of School's Out. Adam did a good job, and Kris tried to keep up, but I think that Danny sounded shouty. At least they seem to be singing live tonight. Allison also sounded kind of bad. She looked hot, though. And Slash is all kinds of awesome. I think these four don't sound very good together. Something about their voices just don't mesh well. It was kind of a trainwreck.
Slash got to plug his album, but mysteriously. It sounds like it's going to be kind of like Santana's collaborative albums. Might be good.
Seacrest asked the Final 4 how they were feeling, and Kris said he was stunned to be there, and Simon said they don't need humble anymore. Adam professed his love for rock. Danny listened back to himself from last night and said that his own Aunt muted him. He said he couldn't stop laughing and thought it was his funniest moment on American Idol. He blamed acoustics for his gaff. Um, no. Allison said that she didn't want to talk back, but felt that she had to. I agree with her.
Paula! I do enjoy Paula's music. After last year's collaboration with Randy, she's got an album coming out. My hubby is excited. I wish that the electronic effects had been left out. She is probably lip syncing, that's for sure. She's got a microphone hooked up to a weeble, wobbling but not falling down. She did some leaping around on dancing boys, who flipped her around like a ragdoll. Even though she was totally lip syncing, the dancing was really nifty and I could dig it. I don't like her non-performance outfit, which looks like a snakeskin thing with a very large large necklace.
And now it's No Doubt! Gwen has put a slightly new spin on Just a Girl. I don't love the new thing, because I love the old thing. I'm glad to see the band back together, though. I liked Gwen's solo stuff, but I love love love No Doubt. I can even forgive Gwen for naming her son Zuma. She's astounding on all levels. The vocals tonight weren't great... but, she's Gwen. I think the camera man lost her for a second. That was distracting, swooping all over the place randomly. I love that the drummer (Adrien?) was in a tutu.
Why are we here again? Right... results.
But first, let's take a look at some past finalists on their home visits upon reaching the Top 3. I miss Blake Lewis and wish he was doing more. He's so cool. Do any of my lovely readers have his album? Worth having? And, oops - I'd forgotten about Syesha.
Finalists are announced in random order tonight, with stools for the lucky three.
Ryan recaps everyone's comments before revealing anything. The first one safe is .... Kris!!! Awesome!!! I'm so happy he made it through. He looked stunned. I think he expected to go home. Good for him. I just love him. So does his wife, who looked about ready to storm the stage.
And before we find out who joins him, it's Daughtry time! I loved Daughtry when he was on Idol, and I love the first album.. I'm guessing I'll love the second album, too. I don't love his funky chin-framing facial hair, but I can forgive him for it. I love the tone of his voice. It's so gosh darned GOOD.
Is Kara wearing something from the Jettson's??? Just wondering.
Chris lamented that there were no instruments allowed on his season, and then was presented a plaque in honor of selling more than 5 million copies. nice.
So, back to the nitty gritty...
Adam is in.
It's down to Allison (please please please) and Danny O'Shouty Gokey.
And Allison is going home.
I am so sad right now. I wanted her to be in the top 2. Danny did not deserve to go on after last night. It was so dreadful.
I wish Allison the best, and hope to hear a whole lot from her in the future. She's wonderful. She sometimes looks like a troll doll, but she's my favorite troll doll.
And I'm happy to get the chance to hear her recap song. She gave the performance her all and rocked it out. Just like she did last night. And that's why more people should have voted for her.
Now, I'm really rooting for Kris.
The way I look at voting is "Would I want to hear this on the radio?" For Adam, though he is supremely talented, I don't think I would like to hear him on the radio. On Broadway? Absolutely. Danny, maybe... but not if he ever - and I mean EVER - makes noises like he made last night ever again. Not even in private. And Kris? I just find his voice and style appealing. I would like to hear him on the radio. I'd like to hear Allison, too.
*sigh*
Is next week judge's choice? I think it's Judge's Choice and Contestant Choice, historically...

American Idol - 4.21.09: Disco Night
Paula has left the prom dress closet and has entered the mother-of-the-bride closet. Seriously. At least Randy has left the hideous sweaters behind. Because of the lack of guest mentor tonight, maybe we can actually get through this without going over.
I think Lil's hair is getting longer and longer each week.
Lil Rounds (I'm Every Woman - Chaka Kahn): Why didn't she go home last week? Seriously? Her vocals were super shakey, and she was trying to pump up the crowd to the detriment of her singing. She wanted me to go from Ay to Zahy. I refuse. This was dreadful. Way back in the beginning, I was of the opinion that Lil was highly overrated. I stand by that opinion. And I miss Alexis. Randy said it sounded wild, but wished she had shown some kind of vocal control. Kara said that America has been waiting for her to sing something like Chaka Kahn, but doesn't think it was worth the wait, and said she's been every woman on stage except herself. Paula reveals that Lil was on vocal rest, because she had lost her voice. Simon said that Lil looked sad, and she said she just had fun. Simon said he's glad she had fun, but thinks it's the last time she'll be singing on Idol. He said her vocals were a mess and karioke. Then she talked back some more.
Kris Allen (She Works Hard for the Money - Donna Summers): He brought his guitar back out and had the bongos working, and he turned the song into a Kris Allen song. I love this. It was really original and took a disco song and made it...not suck. I think he such a dark horse. My husband thinks he is the purest musician they have. Kara said he took a real risk, and it paid off big time. I agree. She wants it to go on his record. Paula said it had a classy Santana vibe, and said that not many men will shop in the women's department, but he shopped there and got a perfect fit. Simon says he needs a translator. He said Kris' performance was original, well thought out, and was fantastic. Randy said Kris knows who he is, and this proves he is ready for the big time. Dawg. Just quoting here.
Danny Gokey (September - Earth Wind and Fire) He's brought the glasses back, and was going full on scruff. Unfortunately, I don't think he took the same kinds of chances that Kris took, and it felt a little frantic, but I like his voice. My friend really doesn't like him and says he's making disco cheesier than Velveeta. I wanted him to do something upbeat, but I'm not sure about this choice. Randy thought he worked the song really hard, and thought it worked. Kara was kind of worried, but thought he showed what an incredible vocalist he is, and thinks his pitch is always spot on. Paula is always amazed by his range, and thinks he has a super sexy voice. Simon can't fault the vocals, but didn't get any star power from it. Paula asserted he will be in the finals.
Allison Iraheta (Hot Stuff) She brought the beginning of the song down, and lounged on red stairs, in an outfit that looked like she was a replicant from Blade Runner, but she sounded pretty good. She's turning a disco song into a rock song. I don't know how she could have chosen a better disco era song, but I don't know if this is enough to keep her safe. And does her crop white leather jacket have tails? Randy thought the arrangement was a little overindulgent, but loves her vocals. Kara said she wasn't happy with the arrangement, and liked the song choice, and the vocal performance. Paula said she never compromises herself, and loved it. Simon thought it was a brilliant performance from the underdog of the night.
Adam Lambert (If I Can't Have You) - Rocking a faux hawk and a rather dapper suit, he brought it down. I still think that others in the competition (Kris especially) have more pleasant sounding voices. You can tell he's had musical theatre training, that's for sure. I thought the arrangement was verging on boring, personally. If it had been just a tad faster I would have liked it better. Randy said he is always showing his range of ability, and says he's ready right now. Kara proclaimed his brilliance, calling this the most memorable performance, and inspiring. Paula has a visceral response when he sings, and felt his vulnerability. Simon loved that it was an original perfomance, and memorable, with immaculate vocals. Ryan said that Paula was melted into a pool of Abdul. I like it.
Matt Giraud (Stayin' Alive) So hilarious to see him doing this song. He's making this song his own, which is really hard with a Beegees song, and he's hitting all the right notes. I really loved it. I'm glad they saved him. Randy didn't love the song choice or the arrangement, but loved his voice, saying this Top 7 is one of the most talented groups ever. Kara said he brought disco back. She likes to see him dance, and called it a solid performance. Paula said that he chooses songs the way she bowls, sometimes it's a gutter ball, and sometimes a strike. She predicts he will be staying. Simon didn't like it so much, and urged him to leave Idol Land, and thought it was a bit desperate. I really enjoyed it and think I will vote for him.
Anoop Desai (Dim all the Lights) He's trying out the facial hair, and it could work for him eventually, but this week, it looks a bit odd because he's got so little. His fashion choices continue to be questionable, with a pale pink sweater, a pink and baby blue striped tie, and a pale suit. Did he wear this to Easter? Not good. I won't bother mentioning the song too much. It started well enough, but the song was really dreadful. Randy said the arrangement was dicey, but again, loves his vocals (except for the bum last note). Kara loved the song choice, and thought it should be on the radio. No, please. Paula loved the scuff, and the suit. Simon thought it was mediocre at best. Thank you, Simon. He thought it was a horrible version of that song, and thought it was his worst performance by a mile. I would tend to agree.
Kris (02) and Matt (05) are my favorites and get my votes tonight. Lil needs to go, and Anoop is probably going with her. Danny could be in the bottom 3 this week... and Allison could also be in trouble. I think I'll throw a few votes at her (04) because I don't want her going anywhere. I know Adam is going to get miles of votes without my help, and I didn't love it, so I'm not going to vote for him.

I'm glad they saved him. Randy didn't love the song choice or the arrangement, but loved his voice, saying this Top 7 is one of the most talented groups ever. Kara said he brought disco back. She likes to see him dance, and called it a solid performance. Paula said that he chooses songs the way she bowls, sometimes it's a gutter ball, and sometimes a strike. She predicts he will be staying. Simon didn't like it so much, and urged him to leave Idol Land, and thought it was a bit desperate. I really enjoyed it and think I will vote for him.
Anoop Desai (Dim all the Lights) He's trying out the facial hair, and it could work for him eventually, but this week, it looks a bit odd because he's got so little. His fashion choices continue to be questionable, with a pale pink sweater, a pink and baby blue striped tie, and a pale suit. Did he wear this to Easter? Not good. I won't bother mentioning the song too much. It started well enough, but the song was really dreadful. Randy said the arrangement was dicey, but again, loves his vocals (except for the bum last note). Kara loved the song choice, and thought it should be on the radio. No, please. Paula loved the scuff, and the suit. Simon thought it was mediocre at best. Thank you, Simon. He thought it was a horrible version of that song, and thought it was his worst performance by a mile. I would tend to agree.
Kris (02) and Matt (05) are my favorites and get my votes tonight. Lil needs to go, and Anoop is probably going with her. Danny could be in the bottom 3 this week... and Allison could also be in trouble. I think I'll throw a few votes at her (04) because I don't want her going anywhere. I know Adam is going to get miles of votes without my help, and I didn't love it, so I'm not going to vote for him.
